| Notes | ||
|
Family and community memory (recalled by Kalk Bay resident Vincent
Cloete, recorded around 2003) held that Susanna was disliked in her own right, for a habit of dropping customers' payment into a pot of boiling water when they came to her dairy for milk. A local rhyme about her husband Gerhardus survived in the same account: "Gert van Blerk, styf en sterk, gou by die bak, maar lui om te werk" (upright and strong, quick to dish up, but lazy to work) -- Cloete, in his own opinion, thought the description of laziness unfair. Family tradition, not archival record. Source: From Blerick to the Cape, Chapter Thirteen. |
